Pedagogical Training

Teaching and Language Pedagogy

The department places great emphasis on rigorous training in pedagogy. Over the course of their studies, students teach language courses as well as receive experience as teaching assistants in culture and/or literature courses. Responsible for language training are the Director of the Language Program, the Supervisor of Graduate Teaching Assistants (Patricia Scarampi) and the Coordinators of the courses graduate instructors teach. They provide in depth mentoring, including regular class observations and pedagogy seminars for all graduate instructors, as well as a methodology course (French 403) for those who are interested.

The department’s optional Graduate Teaching Certificate program affords students the opportunity to further enhance their teaching expertise and portfolio. For requirements of this program, please see the French Teaching Certificate Checklist.

Further resources can be found at NU’s Media and Design Studio. It is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and provides workshops and other opportunities to learn the most up to date methodologies and technologies. The Council on Language Instruction also offers many workshops and opportunities to learn more about language teaching and professional development, including the yearly Language Symposium it organizes in collaboration with other Chicago-based universities.
