The department of French and Italian has been and remains a pioneer in expanding the study of literature and culture beyond traditional geographies and genres.
Our faculty have strengths in literary and critical theory, film and visual culture, and Francophone and postcolonial cultures in a variety of regions (including the Maghreb, the Caribbean, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Asia).
Our broad array of courses, on both the undergraduate and the graduate level, are of interest not only to students who specialize in French or Italian but also to students who have a more general interest in literature, theory, and the Humanities. These courses cover a broad historical range, from Dante and Proust to contemporary film and media.
Members of our teaching faculty are experts in language pedagogy and media-assisted instruction, offering a rigorous language program in both French and Italian.
